When gladiator sandals first appeared on the catwalks back in 2008 we literally thought the fashion world had gone crazy. With their thick spider-like straps, earthy colours and bulky nature, we genuinely thought that this was one trend we would never succumb to. But succumb we did, soon falling in love with the monstrous things.
A contemporary take on Roman sandals, the gladiator sandals are not only comfortable flat sandals but they’re extremely versatile. This year they’re back with a vengeance and with more contrasting strap patterns, studs, buckles, tassels, gems and colour-popping than imaginable.
Leading the way are the tried and tested traditional chunky leather gladiator sandals. With their simple black and tan hues, these comfortable flat sandals make a bold statement when teamed up with feminine floral prints. Take a style cue from Jessica Alba, who teamed her fringed gladiator sandals with her biker jacket to add character and edge to her pretty tea-dress.
This classic style is also great for dressed down days, as shown by Kate Moss, who complements her black gladiator sandals with a chunky black belt and frayed waistcoat. Moda in Pelle has a brilliant pair of comfortable flat sandals in tan which would pull either look off just as well.
A personal favourite, the tribal vibe, is also hot this summer. Gladiator sandals with beads, feathers and interweaved Indian-stripes (as seen on Emma Roberts) are a playful way to add fun to any outfit. Moda in Pelle drives the vibe with their old-leopard print gladiator sandals.
Festival queen Vanessa Hudgens, wears her tribal-inspired sandals with a loose-fitted shirt and denim cut-offs for instant bo-ho chic.
Metallics with buckles and studs have also been integrated into the gladiator look, with fashionista’s like Fearne Cotton and Katy Perry heading the trend. Like Alba, Katy Perry uses her gladiator sandals to make a bold statement, toughening up her smock summer-dress with studded flats.
Fearne however, really radiates her inner rock-chic teaming denim cut-offs with impressive heavily embellished metallic gladiator sandals.
Studs and metal can be worn more subtly though, as shown by Reese Witherspoon, who uses her pale-gold comfortable flat sandals to enhance her cobalt-blue and white printed dress. Sienna Miller shows that gladiator sandals can look elegant, pairing her simple black dress with thin gold straps for a more feminine look.
The newest addition to the gladiator trend is bright, colour-popping flats. At the moment we love the fat ankle buckles on thong gladiator sandals.
Moda in Pelle also have a cute contemporary range of vibrant gladiator sandals, our favourite styles including the Ordita Gladiator Sandals in fuchsia and also in yellow.
Both of these are perfect for creating those holiday vibes and would look fantastic with a tan under a maxi dress or pretty playsuit. They’ll also look great with skinny-jeans so you’ll still be able to wear them when you get back home – making them the perfect shoe style for this summer.
